CWD Real Estate Investment and AC Hotel Grand Rapids Downtown will host the Something Spanish Fundraiser at the newly renovated 37 Ottawa building on Thursday, May 30th from 5:00-7:30 PM, followed by an exclusive after-party at the neighboring AC Hotel.
The Something Spanish Fundraiser acts as both a benefit for Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and a celebration of the completion of 37 Ottawa and the AC Hotel at 50 Monroe. This will be the first time the general public will be able to see the newly-restored building since CWD began removing it from its 1980s “skin” two years ago. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available now on the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital website.
The event will take place on 37 Ottawa’s second floor. Food and beverages will be served throughout the night while donors enjoy conversation and live entertainment.
The Something Spanish Fundraiser begins a week of opening festivities for the AC Hotel. The Spanish-born brand of Marriott hotels brings a touch of European class to its latest location in Downtown Grand Rapids.
Following the Something Spanish Fundraiser, an after-party will be held at the AC Hotel lobby. This will be the first opportunity for people to see the AC Hotel ahead of its Grand Opening on June 3rd. The after party is reserved for event sponsors only.
CWD’s renovations at 37 Ottawa and 50 Monroe work to preserve their historic qualities while adding amenities and features that are necessary to serve businesses today. The two buildings bring renewed energy and possibilities to the area that has been missing for decades.
“We take our responsibility in doing these projects very seriously because they become the fabric of the community – not just CWD Real Estate – and define who we are as a community,” said Scott Wierda, co-managing partner of CWD Real Estate. “So what better way to return a couple of great, old buildings to new vitality than to have an event that benefits another community asset, the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital?”
Built in the 1880s, as the Grand Rapids Refrigerator Company, 37 Ottawa and 50 Monroe have been constants in the Grand Rapids skyline for nearly 135 years. In the 1980s, the buildings underwent a major remodel. The buildings were combined into one, stripped of their architectural details, and encapsulated in an aluminum skin that hid them for a generation.
CWD has since removed the skin and re-separated the buildings. The modern loft offices at 37 Ottawa and the AC Hotel at 50 Monroe represent one of CWD’s most ambitious restoration project to-date.
“We have always known what that skin was hiding and it has been our goal to bring these buildings back for as long as I can remember,” said Sam Cummings, Co-Managing Partner of CWD Real Estate. “Our other projects have been more straightforward restorations of what’s there or the addition of details or amenities. This one was like unwrapping a present, and we are so happy to return this to the community and the urban landscape—it’s such an important location in the center of our City.”
37 Ottawa has “Class A Loft” office suites available from 2,000-15,000 square feet. The building is the newest addition to CWD's growing portfolio of residential and commercial real estate in Grand Rapids.
